How to deal with loose skin?
Our skin, one of the sources of our beauty, is constantly subjected to the effects of free radicals - unstable molecules with unpaired electrons. But because "the world is made for two", an electron is constantly looking passionately for a partner for its negatively charged particle. And sooner or later it finds it, breaking the ties in a neighboring molecule, which in turn becomes a radical and triggers a series of damaging the skin cells processes.
Among these processes is the degradation of collagen - the protein that supports the normal skin turgor. Free radicals are a natural product of metabolism, so our bodies produce them every single day. They are one of the reasons our skin sags visibly over time.
Although practically inevitable, the loss of elasticity can be coped with, to some extend. Firstly, we need to make sure that our bodies get enough antioxidants, the so-called "hunters of radicals." They are found in large quantities in raw fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, green tea, red wine and some seafood.
Topical application of cosmetic products containing substances with antioxidant activity (hyaluronic acid, coenzyme Q10, polyphenols, vitamins C, E and A, carotenoids, etc.) provide equal protection. And for correction of already visible changes, creams and serums containing collagen or ingredients stimulating its production do a perfect job.
To achieve a satisfactory effect from nutrition and cosmetics, however, we need to take a much more comprehensive approach directed against additional source of oxidative stress.
UVA and UVB rays are among the primary generators of free radicals. It is therefore necessary to use sunscreens cosmetics on exposed areas of our bodies when staying outdoors and to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun between 10 am and 2 pm.
Pollutants carried by the air are the next factor that should not be underestimated, because they also cause oxidation, accumulating in the pores. Regular cleaning of the face, especially before bedtime is obligatory, as it prevents the skin from inflammations, which are sources of volatile compounds themselves.
In order to successfully combat the free radicals, we need to also put some efforts to curb the daily mental stress and physical exhaustion, as well as probably the most disastrous for skin elasticity habit - smoking.
Our physical activity has an effect on the skin turgor, too, toning the attached muscles. Using the appropriate exercises we could not only prevent premature skin aging, but also achieve a noticeable tightening.
Wise preventing measures and timely actions against foreseeable imperfections ensure a delay in further complications. And in many cases, they lead to full restoration of the beautiful contour of the face and the body. So, we must get rid of the prejudices that the loss of elasticity is predetermined by genes, gravity and time, and instead focus on the immense regenerative potential of our own motivation.
